A Clash of Kingdoms

A Clash of Kingdoms:
Christianity and the Roman Empire

Biblical Study Tour
May 19–30, 2025

Perhaps no biblical region is more relevant to the church today than ancient Asia Minor.

The Greco-Roman world, with its culture and values, was often at odds with the beliefs of Judaism and Christianity. The worldview of the Roman Empire posed a serious hurdle to the spread of the Good News of Jesus Christ—especially among Gentiles. The issues and challenges these early believers faced are remarkably similar to ours.

How did this Jewish sect of Jesus’s followers, known as “The Way,” spread throughout the Roman Empire to become an official religion in less than 300 years? The answers might surprise you.

I am excited to lead another trip to Turkey in 2025. I have moved the trip from July to May to avoid the extreme summer heat. This trip will dive into the Bible, ancient sites from the books of Acts and Revelation, and what we know of their culture to examine how these early followers of Jesus took the Good News of Jesus to the Gentile world.

Why Turkey and not Greece? Good question! Close to 75% of the New Testament was written from, to, or about Asia Minor. Understanding the culture and circumstances of this time and place can shed new light on the biblical text and offer lessons in how we share the Good News today.

Most people don’t have Turkey on their bucket list. They should. The Greco-Roman ruins in Turkey are more extensive and FAR better preserved than those in Greece or Italy. Furthermore, the people are friendly, the food is delicious, travel is safe, and your dollar goes a long way.
